Re: Who in life do you admire??
I admire Kylie Minogue. I've always been a fan of hers; I loved her music when I was 2 - and I'll still listen to I Should Be So Lucky, Especially For You, Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi etc now - and I love the music she does now. I'd be lying if I said I liked every song she's ever sung, but there have been some great ones, and I loved how she's reinvented herself several times, and is still doing amazingly. And she's such a strong woman for having got through her cancer and had a film made of her recovery. I just think she's amazing.
She's not really made a huge impact on my life really, except being the first cheesy pop artist for me to adore, but I just have a great amount of respect for her.
I also admire Johnny Depp. I don't fancy him like most girls do, but I think he is a tremendous actor. He blows me away with his acting - can you imagine anyone else doing a better Captain Jack Sparrow? And also, I love how he gives surprise visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital to entertain the children - reading bed time stories dressed as Captain Jack - after his daughter Lily-Rose was treated there for kidney failure when she came close to death. And, although it's probably just a drop in the ocean to him, he donated £1m to the hospital for fundraising stuff. I think he's a top bloke.
I'm sure there are a few other people I admire, but I can't think who they are right now.

hmmm
there are many ordinary folk worth admiring methinks.... i once knew a guy with cerebral palsy... he relied heavily on smoking marijuana through a tube.... he couldn't speak and had a carer who would translate... he was completely reliant on this guy for everything, cleaning him, feeding him, pushing his wheelchair and everything... but he was the coolest guy because he made an effort to hang out with all us dudes and was actually hilarious company in spite of his obvious defecits.... he was always telling jokes through his carer and would just take the piss out of people on the tv all the time... he sold his last bit of marijuana to my mate... even though he obviously needed it more... he was happier to see a mate enjoying himself than numbing his own excruciating pain.... a genuine hero of mine....
Re: Who in life do you admire??
ok so mine sounds a bit rubbish now.
i was gonna say, mark hoppus. one of my idols, purely for his immaturity, his attitude towards life and his music. (not that its particuallay good but damn was it fun growing up listening to it)
but then reading what paul said i think my grandad means a hell of alot to me. i wont go in to details but he is more than a hero.

who I admire
as a musician... hahaha no i cant say it!!! .... as someone who hits drums in a band the whole of Army of freshmen are huge heroes of mine. They have been going for 10 years and do not only write the most catchy songs but also put on an immense live show, they have toured the world, playing over 1000 shows, most notibly on the get happy tour with bowling for soup. Heres the thing, they're unsigned. For me thats pretty insperational.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
Any band that has got anywhere without selling out, going on TV talent shows or bands that have been put together to make money.
It proves that good music can get somewhere despite all the rubbish around right now.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
I think mentioning selling out is risky, everyone has different ideas and its a term thrown around very loosely sometimes...
who would you say has "sold out"?
who would you say has "sold out"?
Re: Who in life do you admire??
Any band/artist that has compromised their principles or morals for money and/or fame
That's what I'd say.
That's what I'd say.
Re: Who in life do you admire??
I think the whole "selling out" thing is silly. People say Fall Out Boy sold out, they know that people think that so they take the piss out of themselves, they don't take it too seriously. Thing is, there music is still great in all aspects, production, lyrically, musically and it sells...why should people hate them for that?
"Infinity On High" is quite possibly the most perfectly produced album I've ever heard actually.
The way I see it, make music you love to make, if your creative energy changes, you can't stop it, you gotta let it flow, and if it means you sell more records then so be it.
I tend to think Kanye West is a hypocrit because he went on about being a conscious MC and talking about important issues, now he's all about money, girls etc. But if that's the way he's feeling creatively at the moment then it's on him. I don't like his current music, but not because he "sold out" just because I don't think it's very good compared to his early stuff.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
In that respect it's stupid, people aren't using it properly. They're just blaming FOB for being popular.
I agree with your opinions on Infinity On High btw. I'm absolutely in love with Fall Out Boy ... it's a little sad but I don't care. I've got 'evening out with your girlfriend', 'take this to your grave', 'my heart will always be the b-side to your tounge', 'from under the cork tree' and 'infinity on high' =)
Bit of a FOB geek.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
Thats a fair definition, but one that only the band in question can judge.
All us lowly fans have no way of ever knowing whats been compromised and what was intentional from the beginning.
Busted never "sold out" as far as we can tell because for all we know they intended from the start to be a pop band out to get famous and get girls.
but thats just an example... cos i don't want to be hypocritical...

Re: Who in life do you admire??
Fair enough =)
But I still admire bands who achieve something without selling out, even if I don't know who has or hasn't done it.
So obviously not any particular bands.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
yyeaaaa im not saying you shouldn't not at all, im just saying that we're not in a position where we can know who has or hasn't sold out.
Bands that we think haven't sold out might have done exactly that and covered it up very well with their marketing.
Its a nice ideology though and definitely a good thing to believe.

Re: Who in life do you admire??
I admire lots of people for different reasons but none of them so much that I aspire to be like them.
I do admire the boys from Jackass though just because they're so silly

Re: Who in life do you admire??
Selling out is sometimes defined by the current zeitgeist.... i.e when there is a sound about or an image that is poular, everyone changes their direction to match it because it is popular and lose their integrity in doing so.... how many girl bands came out after the spice girls? bloody millions... especially when 'girl power' was a common tabloid phrase... like 'britpop' ....'emo'.... 'nu-rave' ...'nu-metal' etc.... once generalised labelling occurs in the press, people go mad for it.... it's when bands can avoid this that they are entirely worthy.... and i agree that selling more records isn't selling out as long as you maintain your artistic integrity... but it's always good to be yourself and never to be contrived enough to go with what ever anyone else is doing....
Re: Who in life do you admire??
sell out. with me oh yeah... the record company gonna give me lots of money and everything will be alright. - RBF
i think if a band wants to sell out. let them, i mean if they end up making a trerrible record then tnhats their porogative. i personally feel (i know ilch will disagree wioth me) that lost prophets sold out for their third album. it was all about the hair for ian watkins...

Re: Who in life do you admire??
Yeah i agree with the hair thing..
I think if a band can sign to a major label,
and still make amazing cd's
and still appreciate and do it for the fans..
then good on them. =)
but the bands who don't..
and then forget about everyone who helped them get to where they are..
Should not even be listened to xD
