Venues?!

hmmmmm.... not sure how tight they are on that rule matey

beacon say you have to be 18 but as far as i know they dont really care lol
and ive been told that they let anyone play there as long as youre willing to pay
not sure how true that is but i do know a few ppl that have done it
also soundhole is alrite to play in but the sound technicians are awful
everything sounds pants there
they dont even let the bands sound check
the only time i played there some guy came onstead and started messin around with my amp while i was in the middle of a solo
you dont screw with another guys amp
im sorry it just doesnt happen
he wouldntve had to play with the amp if the other technician had put the mic by the amp in the right place
but its only kids that go there
and its sposed to be the kinda place where you just play your first few gigs to build your confidence up and get to know mother bands and stuff like that
so i guess the poor sound and useless technicians doesnt really matter lol

you don't have to pay to play at beacon, the only rule they seem to have is that the owner picks the support bands now. not sure why, but thats it.

this time of the year though they're probably booked up for a long time. but he might keep your details and ask you to support another band if you dont get your own gig.

Soundhole is great, its in the middle of nowhere, it sounds crap and its full of 12 year olds, you wont get paid and you wont get a sound check. BUT

theres no pressure, nobody cares, you can go enjoy yourselves, if everything goes tits up, its soundhole, it doesnt matter.

seriously, get on myspace, its like the ultimate bands tool, go find a band who have lots of gigs, they'll most likely have the promoters they work with in their top friends. add the promoters.

ALWAYS READ THEIR PROFILE FIRST a lot of promoters are super fussy, if you message them asking for something that's explained on their profile, they'll either get angry or more likely just ignore you completely, so make sure you read before you send any messages.

if you can find a phone number, phone it, leave a message, its a lot harder to ignore than a myspace message.

look at the venues bands are playing, most of them have a myspace. get on it, they'll have the promoters that work out of the venue in their top friends, add them.

if you see a promoter who has a TBC slot in their calender, ask to fill it.

go buy a little address book, a lot of people on myspace ask for a cd to be sent to them, write down the addresses and send out loads of cds at once.

right now t alan have 50 cds waiting to sent off, we've spent about £50 of our wages buying cds, cases, envelopes, stamps, pens and whatever, but its completely worth it. you get gig offers, reviews, exposure, and really really useful feedback.

if you put in the time and effort to send a cd and press pack to a promoter, they appreciate the effort and WILL get back to you.

and when you do phone up to book a gig, always ask about what equipment is provided, what you need to bring and if money is involved.

you dont wana turn up at a gig with just your guitars and find that the venue doesnt provide a PA.

you also dont wana leave a gig and get stopped by the owner demanding £150 to cover the cost because not enough people turned up.

and don't steal lucozade, cos you will have to pay for it.
