get a guitar/keyboard/synth tune and then structure a song and send it to ben for him to write lyrics.
if we do it all together we end up writing something like santa clause is dead Razz

songwriting

Post  pauloftherash on Sun Jan 13, 2008 1:12 pm

what tends to happen is, i write and record a demo of the songs then take them to the band to learn and mess up in a rashy way.... sometimes i'll have the whole arrangent like on curiosity montage or it's so carnal or keep your conscience, and sometimes just guitar and voice like seizures and i don't care and we try to evolve it... sometimes though i meet up with ben and jam something out and he makes up the words as he goes along then i take it home and turn it into something lovely.... like your mother is a prostitite, identify, tres bien, workshy... just started out as my chords and bens words then i added riffs and structure and necessary musical links to help the song become more catchy.... friday night is a definite exception, ben had all these words and some chords and i helped him structure it and write the chorus and musical parts... i give him a lot of credit for that song though.... we have a whole new load of songs that we are learning, most of which are based on me writing and making a demo and taking it to them to destroy nicely..... and on the subject of words first or music first, i would say both at the same time.... it's about spontaneity, if you can randomly play and sing one line that sounds good then it's quite simple to elaborate and take the song somewhere.... alien

A mix of all of them really. When we first got together, the band learnt the instrumentals which I'd already recorded to when I was doing solo stuff. I write lyrics if I have ideas then fit them to music later, or either myself or one of the guys will compose a track on a program called Reason, they will learn the instrumental and I'll write to it. Sometimes we'll just be jamming, come up with a really cool idea and if we want to bang it out that night then I'll put some of my old lyrics to it, because I've written over 100 songs and it feels like a waste not to use them. You can't force music or make it in a structured way, it just comes naturally.

I write all the songs on Cubase including the drum patterns - Occasionally if we haven't got a rehearsal planned I'll email the song(s) to the rest of the band so that when we do get together they may have had a chance to learn the song(s) already and if it sounds OK, it goes in the next set we play - I can write between 2-3 new songs a week and the plan is to get a few more songs recorded in a studio for a potential EP release - Matt
